Info about the Zoom X4 Model 5551 Ethernet/USB ADSL Modem

ADSL Modem + Gateway + Router + Firewall
DSL Modems
Direct Review:
As you can see the DSL Modem is very small so it can fit just about anywhere around your Computer set up. It has both USB and Ethernet connectivity options to you PC or PC's and both the USB and Ethernet connections are live at the same time unlike most units out there. This is great for people upgrading from USB only DSL Modems.
Getting setup and connected in less than 5 Minutes:
I Simply installed the Zoom Install CD, then plugged in the Ethernet cable from the Modem into the Network port on my PC. I then plugged in the my DSL line*. Then I opened the Zoom Web Console by going to it's current default IP of 10.0.0.2 where I entered the default Username and Password. I then went into the Basic Setup screen and entered the VPI and VCI info for the DSL service I was connecting to. This happened to be BellSouth so I entered VPI=8 and VCI=35. Then I Entered my account info and password into the Login box. Then clicked on Save settings and Confirm, the Modem then resets with the info it needs to log on and it immediately logged into the DSL Network. Took less than 5 minutes. As long as the Modem is powered up it will remain logged into the DSL Network so the system is always online.
* The Zoom X4 is unique in that it has a DSL Microfilter built into the unit. There are many ways to keep the High Frequency separate from the low frequency Voice for Telephones in the home or business such as using a Microfilter on each Telephone Jack except the jack the Modem DSL connection of course. With this unit you can set up DSL service without requiring any more filters than the one already in the Modem and no extra wires run. We call it the No Wire Home Run

Manufactured by: Zoom The Zoom X4 (5551) comes equipped with ADSL internet connection and powerful
gateway/firewall/ router options. It covers all the aspects internet users are
concerned about. Secondly, the implementation of these aspects is easy for the
average computer user but offer the options a high-end user would expect from
any product. More importantly, the Zoom X4 is affordable.
Here is a list of the important features:
ADSL Compliance
ATM Protocols Bridge Mode Router Mode Security Ethernet Interface USB Interface Setup
Setting up the Zoom X4 was quite easy and not nearly as difficult as one
might think. As I said before, the average user should have no problem taking
care of the features the Zoom X4 has to offer. In fact, all one must do is setup
the modem (yes, it comes with all needed items), install the software, input the
user information, select the Zoom X4 options, and viola, you’re done. The GUI
Zoom has created for the Zoom X4 is great. It’s never a problem having the Zoom
X4 recognize what features you exactly wish it to be using.
Connecting a host of other computers is a breeze as well. Unfortunately, the
Zoom X4 only supports 2 computers at one time. Connecting a HUB or wireless
access point to Ethernet connection remedies this. It would have been nice to
see at least one more connection on the Zoom X4. I often found myself having to
get up, unplug my Xbox connection and move it over to my PS2. I was like
changing channels without a remote, not cool.
Naturally, no service provider ever give their customers the downstream they
are promised. To often people hear, “That’s a high traffic time.” or “Perhaps
your modem is a little dated.” Naturally, these are just excuses and people
usually just accept the fact that they will not receive the downstream they are
paying for. The Zoom X4 kind of changed that.
In order to test the ADSL connection, I used Broadband Speed Test 2.6 from
download.com.
With my old ADSL modem I was receiving 704 Kbps - so we don’t get a lawsuit
at My Gamer, I will just say that this modem is relatively new and from a
well-known company – and I pleased with that. Fortunately, my pleasure level
went through the roof after I installed the Zoom X4.
After installing my Zoom X4 I was downstreaming a whopping 1.1 Mbps! Yeah, it
was nuts. The difference was noticeable, naturally, with my computer downloads
and Xbox LIVE! connection.
The Firewall option of the Zoom X4 was tested with SecureScan NX 2.5. The
test came back with flying colors and it would seem Zoom X4 offers just the
needed protection all internet users would enjoy to see on their computers.
Greatest thing about the Zoom X4 firewall is how easy it can be customized for
any environment.
In the end…
In the end, the Zoom X4 far exceeded my expectations when I first received
it. Its performance and options put it far step ahead most of its competitors.
And, with its affordability, the Zoom X4 leaps in front of any person who might
be looking to upgrade their ADSL modem or just looking for an all-in-one
solution. Finally, people have a product that works well, offers a host of
options, and eliminates the hassle of cluttered network area. You can do
yourself no wrong with the Zoom X4

Speed, reliability, and
protection are the key aspects people are concerned about when setting up an
internet connection. They worry about the speed of their modem, the reliability
of their connection, and the type of protection they are getting from their
firewall.
The average user rarely wishes to tackle setting up any of
these items, yet alone all three. Why not an all-in-one solution? Well, Zoom has
answered this call with the 5551 ADSL modem.
Supplied by:
Zoom
Price: $99.00
- Maximum downstream rate of 8 Mbps
- Maximum
upstream rate of 1 Mbps
As you can see, the Zoom X4 has a host of
features that even the average user would
find necessary when purchasing a router,
modem, etc. for their internet usage. Naturally
the most important aspect is the actual
downstream of the Zoom X4, which is labeled
to be at rate of 8 Mbps.
Affordable
Works very well
